The problem is finding a system that will work for you personally. You may have to combine several systems together in order to develop the perfect map memorization technique that matches the way that you think.
One major tip that I can give you is to break down a map mentally and then to try to remember each smaller section. If you look at a huge map, you will become overwhelmed with the complexity of it and just give up on memorizing it.
